Where to stay on Sanibel Island

You can stay on Sanibel, on Captiva or on the mainland in Fort Myers. This page does not name lodging. It helps you choose an area, because the area decides how far you are from the beaches, the lighthouse and the Ding Darling refuge.

Check the current state of repairs before you book, since recovery from the hurricanes is still going on. The hurricane recovery page explains what has reopened. If you already know your stay, look at Sanibel Island tours to plan the days.

For most first visits, choose the Sanibel side of the island and pick the end that matches your plan: East End for the lighthouse beach, West Gulf Drive for the Tarpon Bay Road beach and the refuge. Choose Captiva if you want its own beaches and accept that it is a separate island over the Blind Pass bridge. Choose Fort Myers if a mainland base suits your trip better and you accept the toll on each crossing onto the island.

The areas in detail

Captiva Island

Taxes and fees on your stay

Lee County adds a tourist development tax of 5 percent on the gross rent, including mandatory fees, for stays of up to 6 months. Sales tax of 6.5 percent comes on top, which makes about 11.5 percent when the same amount applies and no exemption is in play. There is no fixed visitor tax per person and night.

Beach parking is separate from your room. At the city beach parks it is $5 per hour, and paid time at Captiva Beach does not carry over to the Sanibel parks. Disabled parking is free at the city parks when you hold a valid permit.

How to choose

  • Beaches and shelling: pick the area next to the beach park you plan to use. See shelling on Sanibel.
  • Wildlife and paddling: West Gulf Drive is closest to Tarpon Bay and the refuge.
  • Captiva: it has its own beaches, but parking there is priced differently from Sanibel.
  • Budget: compare total prices including taxes, fees and the Causeway toll.
