The Sanibel seashell museum at a glance

The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium is the place on the island that explains the shells you pick up on the beach. The Living Gallery has aquariums and touch pools, with about 60 species of mollusks and other sea animals. Many visitors search for the "Sanibel seashell museum" or simply the "Sanibel museum". Both mean this museum.

The museum works well on a hot afternoon, after a morning of shelling, or when weather keeps you off the sand.

What you can see inside

Aquariums, touch pools and the story behind the shells.

Living Gallery

Aquariums show live mollusks and other marine animals, and touch pools let you get close to some species. Exhibits change, so do not plan a visit around one particular animal.

Shells and research

Beyond the aquariums, the museum keeps a shell collection and does shell research. It also covers the junonia, a rare shell whose living animal is hard to reach because it lives in deep water. Nobody can promise you will find one on the beach.

Link to the beach rules

The museum is a good stop before your first shelling morning. Our Sanibel shelling guide covers the rule on live shells, the penalties and good habits on the sand.

Rebuilding

The island is still recovering from Hurricane Ian in 2022, and the museum has been rebuilding. Not every exhibit is filled on every day, so treat the list above as a general picture. The hurricane page has the wider recovery story.

Sanibel Historical Museum and Village

A separate attraction at 950 Dunlop Road. It is not part of the shell museum ticket. Parking is free.

Self-guided admission is $20 for ages 19 and up and $10 for ages 6 to 18. Children under 6 are free. A guided round runs on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., and groups can arrange a visit. The last ticket is sold one hour before closing.

Hours follow the season. From mid-October to April the village is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. From May to July the hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. From August to mid-October it is closed for the season.
