Taxi and transfer from Fort Myers airport (RSW)

Taxis at RSW charge zone fares instead of a meter. The fare covers up to 4 passengers, each extra passenger adds $10, and the toll is included. You can walk up to a taxi without a reservation. The exact fare to Sanibel depends on the zone, so ask for the price before you get in.

A prebooked transfer is another option if you arrive late, travel as a group or carry a lot of luggage. Compare the all-in price and what happens if your flight is late. Rideshare prices vary, so check the price in the app before you book.

Public transit is limited. LeeTran runs route 50 from the airport to the Beach Park and Ride on the mainland. That does not mean a bus goes onto the island, so do not plan an island trip around it.

How you payToll
Transponder or prepaid account$6

The toll is collected electronically and cash is not accepted. Rental car companies can add their own fees for the toll, so ask when you pick up the car.

Car rental and parking

RSW has a rental car facility on site. A car is the simplest way to reach beaches, the refuge and Captiva. On the island you can also use the shared use paths; see the Sanibel bike paths.

Parking is the main cost on the island. City beach parks charge $5 per hour, including Lighthouse Beach, Bowman's Beach, Tarpon Bay Road Beach and Blind Pass. Captiva Beach costs $25 for 2 hours or $40 for the day, plus taxes and fees. Disabled parking is free at city parks with a valid permit. The Wildlife Drive in the Ding Darling refuge costs $10 per vehicle. The beaches guide has the full list.

Tampa and Miami airports

Tampa International (TPA) and Miami International (MIA) are options if flights to RSW cost more or do not suit you. Each is about 3 hours by road: roughly 3 hours 10 minutes and 156.5 miles from TPA, and 3 hours 13 minutes and 156.8 miles from MIA. Traffic and your exact destination change those times.

Plan the extra drive into your budget and your first day.

Getting around once you are here

Captiva lies north of Sanibel, over the Blind Pass bridge, so you drive through Sanibel to reach it. Read about Captiva Island before you go. The Causeway was repaired after the storms and the project has a completion date of 1 November 2025. Details are on the hurricane recovery page.

Travelers from Germany can enter under the Visa Waiver Program for stays up to 90 days with an approved ESTA, if they meet all the conditions. The ESTA fee is between $40.27 and $40.62, so check the exact amount on the official ESTA site before you apply.
