Sanibel Island beaches at a glance

Sanibel Island beaches are public parks run by the city, and you pay for parking, not for entry. The fee is per vehicle and per hour, not per person. The main parks are Bowman's Beach, Gulfside City Park, Tarpon Bay Road Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Blind Pass and Turner Beach, with Captiva Beach (Alison Hagerup) a short drive north.

All large beach parks are open again after Hurricane Ian. Turner Beach reopened on 25 April 2025. "Open" does not mean every facility is back, and it does not mean the water is open for swimming. Follow posted signs.

Parking rules and exceptions

What your fee covers and what it does not.

Disabled permits

Parking with a valid disabled permit is free at the city parks.

County parking pass

The Lee County parking pass is valid at Bowman's Beach and Turner Beach, not at Blind Pass.

Captiva Beach

Paid time at Captiva Beach does not carry over to the city parks on Sanibel. Turner Beach is on Captiva but run by the City of Sanibel.

Hours

Plan Bowman's Beach and Turner Beach for daylight hours, from dawn to dusk. The 24-hour parking fee is not permission for a night visit.

Safety, dogs, turtles and smoking

Swim only where it is allowed. Blind Pass has a swimming ban because of dangerous currents, and an open park does not override a local ban. Do not count on lifeguards being on duty.

After the hurricanes, debris can lie hidden in the sand and water. Wear shoes. Red tide can reach the coast in some periods, so check the state's current status before you go.

Dogs on Sanibel beaches must be on a leash. Turner Beach, on Captiva, does not allow dogs. Smoking and vaping are covered by Ordinance 26-001, with a possible fine of up to $500.

Sea turtle season

Nesting runs from 1 May to 31 October. Light from inside or outside a building must not reach the beach, and this rule applies all year. Close curtains and turn lights off at night. Remove beach furniture between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., fill in holes and leave nests alone.

Shells matter here too. Never take a live shell: see our Sanibel shelling guide for the rule. Some shelling beaches, such as Cayo Costa and North Captiva, can only be reached by boat, as covered in Sanibel shelling tours.
