Sanibel dolphin tours and boat trips compared
Boat trips from Sanibel fall into two groups. Shared cruises sell seats by person and suit couples and families. Private charters sell the whole boat for a fixed time and suit groups who want their own route. Do not compare a per-person price with a per-boat price.
Wildlife lives in these waters, but no operator can promise a sighting. Treat every animal as a bonus and pick a trip for the water, the scenery and the time of day.

Our picks: boat tours
The catamaran sunset cruise is the pick for the lighthouse view, the sail is the quieter choice, and the wildlife cruise is the simplest daytime option. All of them leave from the Fort Myers Beach area.

On the island
Some trips leave from a marina on Sanibel.
On the mainland
Others leave from a marina on the mainland near Fort Myers. Do not treat the two as the same place.
On Captiva
Captiva Island is a third base for boat trips. A trip can leave from more than one place, so confirm the departure for your date.
Reservations
Public dolphin cruises usually ask for a reservation, and private trips ask for a deposit. Book ahead.
If you drive, read how to cross the causeway in our guide to getting to Sanibel.

Meeting point and date
The same operator can run several products from different docks. Confirm the address on your booking and allow for the drive from your lodging.
Per person or per boat
Shared cruises are priced per person and private charters per boat. A boat price is not a price for each guest, so divide it by the number of people before you compare.
Length and timing
Private dolphin trips run about 2 to 3 hours. A private sunset cruise has a 2 hour minimum and a private nature or shelling cruise a 3 hour minimum, with extra hours at $100. Check the sunset time for your travel date and leave a little slack.
Wildlife and rules
A sighting is never certain. Keep the distances listed below and do not ask your skipper to get closer.
Rules for dolphins and manatees
NOAA recommends staying at least 50 yards (about 46 m) from dolphins. Do not feed them, touch them or chase them. The 50 yards is a recommendation, and harassment of marine mammals is a separate offense, so follow your skipper's lead and do not ask to get closer.
Florida's wildlife agency (FWC) asks you to watch manatees passively. Keep your distance, do not chase, feed or touch them, do not separate a mother from her calf, and do not enter posted no-entry zones. There is no single meter rule that fits every place, so keep clear.
