Where to paddle on Sanibel
The classic Sanibel kayak trip starts at Tarpon Bay, a concession site inside the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. Do not mix it up with Tarpon Bay Road Beach, which is the Gulf beach access on the other side of the island. From the Tarpon Bay harbor you can paddle the open bay or follow the marked Commodore Creek trail through the mangroves.
The creek is the main reason to come. Plan for about 2.5 miles round trip from the harbor, roughly 1.5 hours at a relaxed pace. Narrow channels, mangrove roots and shallow water set the tone, and herons, egrets and ibis may show up, though no sighting can be promised.

Our picks: kayak tours
There is no guided kayak tour on Sanibel in our list, so these start on the mainland: Everglades City for the mangrove tunnels, Bonita Springs for the clear-kayak tour, and Don Pedro Island for a naturalist-guided paddle.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide and Viator. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

Kayak and canoe rental prices in 2026
Prices at the Tarpon Bay concession, before tax.
| Boat | First 2 hours | Each extra hour | Where it can go |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single kayak | $30 | $15 | Commodore Creek and open Tarpon Bay |
| Double kayak or canoe | $40 | $20 | Commodore Creek and open Tarpon Bay |
| Stand-up paddleboard, Hobie pedal kayak | โ | โ | Open Tarpon Bay only, not the creek |
Rentals are first come, first served, so there is no normal kayak reservation. The exception is the Hobie pedal kayak, where a reservation is recommended. For most visitors, a single or double kayak for the 2 hours of the base rental is the right choice for the creek trail.
Rules and hours for the creek
What applies on the water.
Stay in your boat
Swimming, snorkeling and getting out of the boat are not allowed. A rented boat has to stay in Tarpon Bay, so you cannot take it to the Gulf side.
Pickup and return
Boats are handed out from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and must be back by 5:30 p.m. Add the paddling time to that window and start early.
Opening days differ
Opening days and hours range from daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the current days and hours before you drive out.
Wildlife distance
Watch manatees and dolphins passively. Keep your distance, do not chase, feed or touch them, and stay out of any marked manatee protection zone. For dolphins, NOAA recommends at least 50 yards (about 46 m).
Stand-up paddleboarding on Sanibel
Paddleboards are not allowed in the creek.
Stand-up paddleboards, Hobie pedal kayaks and pontoon boats stay in the open part of Tarpon Bay. The creek trail is for kayaks and canoes only. If you want the mangrove channels, choose a kayak. If you want open water and a wide view of the bay, a paddleboard works, but wind and tide matter more there.
A guided paddle is a good option if you have not paddled before. The cards above show guided kayak and paddle trips with current prices. For a bigger water day, compare them with the dolphin and boat tours, and for the same style of paddling on another Gulf Coast island, see kayaking on Anna Maria Island.
