Sanibel weather in short
Sanibel has a warm climate with a clear split in rainfall. The wetter months run from June to September, and the drier stretch runs from November to April. Highs are mild in winter and above 32 °C from June to September. Water temperatures follow the air, from about 19 °C in January to about 31 °C in August.
The numbers below are climate averages for 1991 to 2020, not a forecast and not a promise of good beach days. They come from a mainland airport station at Fort Myers, not from a station on the island. For the best time to visit, the choice depends on what you want: drier days, warm water or quieter summer mornings. If you plan boat or paddle trips, compare the options on the Sanibel tours page once you know your month.

Best time to visit Sanibel
Match the season to your plans.
November to April
These are the drier months, with 45 to 62 mm of rain and highs from 23.9 to 29.6 °C. They suit a visit built around outdoor time, biking and the refuge. Water is cooler, about 19 to 26 °C.
Biking on Sanibel →May and October
May brings 87.9 mm of rain and October 78.2 mm, with warm water of 28.3 and 27.0 °C. These are the shoulder months between the drier and wetter halves of the year.
June to September
The hottest and wettest stretch, with highs above 32 °C and water near 30 °C. Summer mornings at low tide are a good time for shelling, so this season fits early starts and midday breaks.
Shelling on Sanibel →There is no single best month for everyone. Choose drier air or warmer water, then plan around the rain.
Hurricane season and storms
Know the dates before you book.
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Tropical storms can also form outside those dates, so winter is not completely storm-free. Sanibel was hit by Hurricane Ian in 2022 and by Helene and Milton in 2024. If you travel in the season, keep your plans flexible and read the cancellation rules for hotels and tours. The hurricanes page covers recovery and what has reopened.
Red tide and sea turtle season
Two seasonal topics for the beach.
Red tide is an algae bloom that can affect the water and beaches on the Gulf Coast. Florida FWC publishes the current status, so check it before a beach day, since a clear report on one date says nothing about another. Sea turtle nesting season runs from 1 May to 31 October. City rules against beach lighting apply all year, not only in that season. At night, close the curtains and switch off lights that shine on the beach.
