Sanibel Island tours at a glance
Most Sanibel tours are on the water. You can join a public cruise, book a private boat for your group, rent a kayak or canoe in Tarpon Bay, or hire a bike. Public trips are priced per person, private boats per boat. Compare the two on the same basis before you decide.
Check one thing first: where the tour leaves from. Some boats start at a marina on Sanibel, others at a marina in Fort Myers on the mainland. The drive between them adds time and the Causeway toll, so look at the meeting point before you book.

Our picks: tours around Sanibel
Most boat and paddle trips leave from Fort Myers Beach or Bonita Springs, so count the drive into your day. The sunset sail is the quiet evening choice, the dolphin and shelling cruise is the one with a shelling stop, and the Everglades City kayak trip is the full day out.

The tour types in detail
What each one involves.
Dolphin and sunset cruises
Some leave from a marina on the island, others from a marina in Fort Myers on the mainland. They are not the same place. Public trips usually ask for a reservation, and private trips ask for a deposit.
Dolphin and boat tours โShelling boat trips
Cayo Costa and North Captiva can only be reached by boat. The half-day trip lasts 3 hours, with about 30 minutes each way on the boat and about 2 hours on the beach. Guests step off by ladder into knee-deep water.
Sanibel shelling tours โKayak and canoe outings
Tarpon Bay lies inside the Ding Darling Refuge. The Commodore Creek Trail is a marked route for kayaks and canoes only. Paddleboards stay in the open water of the bay. Rental is first come, first served.
Kayaking in Tarpon Bay โBike hire and cycling
Shared use paths cover much of the island. Helmets are required under age 16. Rental prices vary by shop and are not set for the whole island.
Biking on Sanibel โDay trips from the mainland
Some tours listed on Sanibel pages start in Fort Myers, Fort Myers Beach or further away. Treat them as mainland departures and plan the Causeway into the day.
Day trips from Sanibel โWhat to check before you book
The details that change a day.
Meeting point and date
The same operator can run several products from different docks. Confirm the address on your booking, and compare the drive time from your hotel.
Per person or per boat
Public trips are priced per person and private charters per boat. A group price is not a price for each guest.
Park fees and extras
A shelling trip to Cayo Costa adds $2 for state park entry in 2026. Paddle rentals add tax.
Access to remote beaches
Boat access to Cayo Costa changes, and a regular ferry cannot be assumed. Ask the operator where you will land.
Wildlife rules
Stay at least 50 yards (about 46 m) from dolphins, and never feed, touch or chase them. Watch manatees passively and keep out of protected zones.
Sanibel tours: frequently asked questions
How much do tours on Sanibel cost?
Public cruises cost about $55 to $65 for adults and $40 to $50 for children in 2026. Private boats start at $300 to $375 and reach $500 for up to 6 people. Kayak rental starts at $30 for 2 hours. These are examples, not fixed island rates.
Do I need to reserve a tour?
Public cruises usually ask for a reservation, and private charters ask for a deposit. Kayak rental in Tarpon Bay is first come, first served, with no regular reservation.
Will I see dolphins?
Maybe. Dolphins and manatees are wild animals, and no operator can promise a sighting. Treat them as a bonus.
Do tours leave from Sanibel itself?
Some do, from a marina on the island. Others leave from the mainland in Fort Myers. Check the meeting point on your booking.
Which tour is best for children?
That depends on the child. A public cruise has a set length and a child price up to age 12. Kayaking needs paddling comfort, and a shelling trip suits children who like walking a beach.
