Sanibel Island at a glance
Sanibel is a barrier island off the southwest coast of Florida, in Lee County. The city had an estimated 6,303 residents in July 2025 and about 16.18 square miles (41.91 kmยฒ) of land. Captiva Island lies to the north, joined to Sanibel by the bridge over Blind Pass. Fort Myers sits on the mainland, and you reach the island by car over the Sanibel Causeway.
The island is known for shelling, the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge with its Wildlife Drive, the Sanibel Lighthouse, wide public beaches and calm water for kayaks and boats. Prices on this site are in US dollars and carry a 2026 date. They change, so check them before you go.

What this guide covers
Start with the things to do on Sanibel Island if you have a few days. Pick shelling if the beach is the reason you are coming. Look at Sanibel Island tours if you would rather book a boat, a kayak or a guided trip. The pages on the drive from the airport, the weather and hurricane recovery help you decide when and how to come.
Sanibel is a good place for slow days. Most visitors split their time between a beach, the refuge and one boat or paddle trip. Plan the boat or paddle trip first, because it has the fixed time. Neighbouring Gulf Coast islands to the north have their own guides, including Siesta Key and Anna Maria Island.
Our picks: Sanibel tours
The sunset cruise with lighthouse views and the Everglades safari are the two big outings, and the bike or e-bike rental is the cheapest way to see the island itself. The paddle tour starts in Bonita Springs, not on Sanibel, so plan the drive.

Sanibel Island: frequently asked questions
Is this the official Sanibel website?
No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not run by the City of Sanibel, Lee County, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or a visitors bureau, and it is not connected to any resort, restaurant, shop or tour operator.
How do I get to Sanibel Island?
You drive over the Sanibel Causeway from Fort Myers. The airport is Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), roughly 24 miles (39 km) from the island. A 2-axle car pays $6 with a transponder or prepaid account and $9 by license plate in 2026. See getting to Sanibel.
Can I collect shells on Sanibel?
Yes, empty shells. Live shells are protected, and shelling is banned in the waters of the Ding Darling Refuge. Read the shelling page before your first walk.
Do I need a car on the island?
Most visitors arrive by car. Bike paths run along much of the island and are shared with walkers, so cycling works for short trips. See biking on Sanibel.
When is the best time to visit?
The weeks from November to April are drier than June to September, when monthly rainfall is far higher. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Details are on the weather page.
Is Captiva part of Sanibel?
No. Captiva is its own island to the north, joined by the bridge over Blind Pass. It is part of unincorporated Lee County, not a district of the city of Sanibel. See Captiva Island.
